Before a new chemical, polymer or certain biotechnology-derived substance can be manufactured in or imported into Canada, it may be subject to notification and assessment under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act, 1999 (CEPA) and the New Substances Notification Regulations (NSNR). Generally, substances that are not already listed onCanada's Domestic Substances List (DSL)must be assessed by Environment and Climate Change Canada and Health Canada before applicable manufacture or import thresholds are exceeded.
