As of January 1, 2026, all regulated parties must comply with Canada's Front-of-Package (FOP) nutrition labelling requirements.
Health Canada’s updated regulations require most consumer prepackaged foods that contain saturated fat, sugars, and/or sodium at or above specified thresholds to display a nutrition symbol on the front of the package.
The FOP nutrition symbol is designed to help consumers quickly identify foods that are high in saturated fat, sugars, and/or sodium, supporting more informed food choices. The regulations establish specific thresholds based on the type of food, as well as mandated requirements for the symbol’s location and format.

The regulations also include full and conditional exemptions for certain food products. Understanding whether a product requires an FOP symbol, and which requirements apply, depends on factors such as the product category, nutrient levels, and applicable exemptions.
The transition period for the new requirements ended on January 1, 2026. Products manufactured, imported, or packaged at retail before this date may continue to be sold on store shelves until existing stock is depleted.
