Omega Score™

The Omega Score™ Blood Test

What is it?

The Omega Score™ test is an essential fatty acid test that measures the amount of long-chain omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, specifically eicosapenaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic aid (DHA), present in the blood. Specific blood levels of EPA and DHA have been associated with a reduced risk of sudden death from cardiovascular disease.

How does it work?

EPA and DHA are naturally-occurring omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids derived from foods such as fish, flax and walnuts or from dietary ingredients like fish oil, krill oil and flaxseed. Although not categorized as essential dietary nutrients in the traditional sense, the consumption of adequate levels of EPA and DHA has been shown to support cardiovascular health in numerous human clinical studies.

The Omega Score™ test is used to determine whether an individual is at risk for cardiovascular disease based on their blood levels of EPA and DHA. The test measures the biomarker known as serum/plasma phospholipid and correlates these results directly to evidence from the clinical literature. Fasting is not required for this test.

Test results are provided in an easy to understand report to allow you to compare your blood levels of EPA and DHA with scientifically proven cut-offs.

Who can benefit from the Omega Score™?

Anyone who wishes to know their risk for cardiovascular disease can benefit from the Omega Score™. Not only does the test inform you about your risk for heart disease, but it also tells you whether or not you are consuming adequate levels of EPA and DHA for heart health. You can then use this information to figure out how much more EPA and DHA you need to consume to reduce your heart disease risk.

If the test reveals that you have inadequate blood levels of EPA and DHA, and you choose to increase your intake through omega-3-rich foods and supplements, you can then track your progress toward optimal heart health by getting tested again.

Where can I get tested?

The Omega Score™ test is available globally. The Omega Score™ testing facility has full Health Canada approval and is covered under some U.S. insurance plans and some Canadian employee benefit packages. The test has two CPT codes for U.S. insurance eligibility. The level of coverage in both the U.S. and Canada is dependent on the extent of each individual patient’s plan. European customers can order this test through our online store. For all other countries, please contact Sales for ordering information.
